Crochet Beetle Project
I crocheted this as a gift for my senior friend, who graduated this year. He has always loved insects and entomology, which is why I created a Hercules beetle. Thanks to him, I have learned about the importance of different types of insects and their roles in our ecosystems. He’s taught me to pay more attention to the bugs I see in my everyday life and be interested in them rather than be scared of them.
Hercules beetles are the world’s longest beetle, and are named for their strength. They are found in mountainous and lowland rainforests, and they contribute to these ecosystems by eating rotting wood while they are in their larval stage. When these insects mature, they consume fresh or rotting fruit and tree sap. Many people would be scared to see a Hercules beetle in the wild due to their large size and intimidating pincers. However, these insects are incredibly beneficial to the environment, showing that it’s important not to judge an insect by its appearance.
